Success Wheel

What is the Success Wheel?

The Success Wheel portrays Beyond Athletes’ holistic approach of developing athletes beyond the game. As a society, we place such a high premium on winning that the coaches, players and parents often forget the true reason for sport. Sport is meant to develop the whole person, the body in conjunction with the mind. If we neglect to use this holistic approach, we are doing a great disservice to our students, coaches, parents and anyone involved.

Our curriculum focuses on providing attendees with life skills that build character in all areas of life: emotional, mental, physical, social, spiritual and vocational. We believe that focusing on these skills will give their teams the best opportunity to succeed. But, more importantly, they will give each player life lessons and skills to assist them in succeeding outside of sports.

Character – The Outside Circle

The best programs are built on character skills. Character shapes who you are as a person (thus depicted as the outermost part of the Success Wheel). It is defined as the qualities, behaviors, feelings and actions that are distinctive to an individual. Character encompasses all areas of life. It is something that changes, for better or worse, as one faces challenges and adversity throughout life. With the proper tools, discipline and intention, these traits can be enhanced or even completely changed for the better.

Areas of Life – The Sectors of the Circle

Mental

What do the greatest athletes of all time have in common? Whether you are talking about Muhammad Ali making it one more round in the ring, Michael Jordan earning the acclamation of “greatest basketball player of all time”, or Michael Phelps taking his 23rd Olympic gold by only 100ths of a second, they all have at least one thing in common….MINDSET!

Some of the most impactful results can be achieved by learning to direct the mind in a positive and productive direction and then reinforcing those thoughts on a consistent basis. The Beyond Athletes’ curriculum covers some of the most powerful life skills such as how to become intentional, developing confidence, perseverance, consistency and more!

Physical

Our society often looks at diet and exercises as a fad or trend. In reality, it is a lifestyle choice that, when properly and consistently implemented, can lead to great health and vitality. As stated by Mahatma Gandhi, “It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.”

Some examples of our curriculum covering this aspect include: properly fueling your body, prioritizing sleep, avoiding risky behaviors and implementing proper exercise. Through this curriculum we build upon character traits of discipline, self-control, persistence, poise and pride to name a few.

Social

Through athletics, participants become very familiar with the concept of becoming a team player. Athletes also learn lessons in communicating effectively, becoming a leader and role model, resolving conflict and more. These are all great soft skills that can benefit the athletes in school, on the job and at home.

Our curriculum covers many of these topics and other pressing topics such as managing social media. Through this curriculum we build upon character traits of respect, honesty, leadership, generosity and more.

Spiritual

In today’s world more than ever, it is imperative that we help our youth build a strong sense of purpose as well as values and beliefs. We want our youth to feel enabled to make a positive difference in themselves and the world around them. Athletics is a great avenue to discover strengths and weaknesses that help hone in on this sense of purpose.

We know that each individual is uniquely made and has his or her own set of gifts (aka strengths) and beliefs. Our curriculum will help guide participants to discover those gifts. We will build upon character traits such as contentment, peacefulness, integrity and discernment.

Vocational

According to the NCAA, “… of the nearly 8 million students currently participating in high school athletics in the United States, only 480,000 of them will compete at NCAA schools. And of that group, only a fraction will realize their goal of becoming a professional athlete.” For this reason, we believe it is crucial that athletics is utilized to help participants learn work ethic, productivity, time management and other vocational skills to prepare them for life beyond the game.

Our attendees will be introduced to what it takes to develop character traits such as accountability, ambition, responsibility, becoming a team player and more.

Life Skills – The Core of the Circle

Life skills refer to the skills needed to make the most out of life.  These skills are usually associated with managing and living a better quality of life.  They help individuals accomplish their ambitions and reach their full potential.   By learning new skills, our graduates will be better equipped with the tools needed to live a more productive and fulfilling life. Further they will have better resources to help them cope with the inevitable life challenges that come their way.
